Urogynecology and Female Pelvic Medicine

A gynecologist is a doctor that cares for women with reproductive conditions. Sometimes, though, more is needed. A Urogynecologist, a surgical specialist in the field of reconstructive surgery and female pelvic medicine, may be able to provide more expertise.

The pelvic floor is an area that allows control of the uterus, bladder, vagina, and the rectum. It is made up of various ligaments, muscles, connective tissues, and nerves. This area is often damaged by child birth, multiple child birth, repeated heavy lifting, chronic disease and/or surgery.

Some symptoms of damage to or dysfunction of the pelvic floor consists of the following:

  • Incontinence; the loss of bladder and/or bowel control.
  • Difficulty urinating or moving bowels.
  • Pelvic pain created by the bladder; generally feels like a burning sensation or other pelvic discomfort including urethral pain.
  • Overactive bladder.
  • Prolapse or the descent of pelvic organs, a bulge and/or pressure, a dropped uterus, bladder, vagina, or rectum.
